| Community News GERMAN MUSIC SHOWCASED DURING WEIMAR GEDENKE MAY 8-9 If you haven’t a clue of what “upbeat” German music consists of, you’ll have a chance to be a part of it at the Weimar Gedenke Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9th. Gedenke in English is a “time of remembrance”—time to enjoy the music, food, cultures, and traditions that make up the great community of Weimar. This event promises family entertainment that includes a very special German exhibit at the museum, BBQ cook-offs, contests, kids areas, food, and music for all—“where Texas hospitality and German customs meet”.
Musical entertainment with the Jubilee Polka Band kicks off Friday, May 8th from 7 to 11 pm. The Jubilee Polka Band, from the New Braunfels/San Antonio area, were established in 1988 and perform in German costume playing everything from traditional European German music, polkas, waltzes, to pop and country. Some of the festivals that this extraordinary group has performed includes: the Wurstfest, San Antonio Stock Show, Aqua Fest, and the Octoberfest of Ruidoso, New Mexico, just to name a few.
Continuous music throughout the day Saturday, May 9th, will charm the visitors and locals alike. The Round Top Brass Band performs at the Gazebo beginning at 11:30 a.m. Formed in 1969 with the firm purpose in mind of gathering professional musicians with other brass music enthusiasts, this band provides an authentic brass sound that you just don’t want to miss. Central Texas was the new home for the thousands of immigrants from Germany as well as Bohemia and Moravia in the 1800’s. This band plays the sounds of the polkas, waltzes, and marches that the settlers brought from the homelands.
Local young adults will play a major role in the Gedenke celebration. The La Grange High School German Club Band and Dancers will “wow” the audiences from 2:30 – 3:30 pm. Under the direction of LeeAnn Hartmann for decades, this organization has won numerous State of Texas awards for their renditions of German music and dance. This year, both the band and dance groups placed second in German state competition and consistently place in the top five each year. Their performances include local events, national and international festivals such as Fiesta in San Antonio and the Big Joe Polka Show.
Blasmusik Texas will take over the pavilion from 3:30 – 5 pm. Known also as The Texas All-State German Band, this 45-piece European instrumentation group is comprised of professional musicians from throughout Texas and were formed in 1993 in Fredericksburg. Their repertoire is music of Central Europe, primarily German, Czech, Alsatian, and Austrian polkas, waltzes, marches and Volksmusik. The primary objective of this group is to bring outstanding musicians together for friendship and to perform the unique German-style music for enjoyment of the audience. They have toured Europe and play for special events and festivals in promotion of the heritage and culture through music.
A party could not be complete without some local Texas country music from 5:30 until 8:30 pm. Southbound 955 of Fayetteville have been performing for the last few years in central Texas areas. Originally formed for an FFA talent contest, the young adults realized they had a good thing going with their music and decided to pursue it. Their style of music is Texas country with some traditional and southern rock included in the mix. With a unique style and broad range of music setting them apart, it’s no wonder their slogan is “…playin’ the music you live..”
To cap off Gedenke, one of the locals favorites, the Telstars, will be performing from 8:30 until midnight. A popular band since the early 1960’s, expect great selections of music including the golden oldies, rock, country, and more. The Telstars performances have included the Flatonia Czhilispiel, Weimar Gedenke, Schulenburg Festival, and the Fayette County Country Fair. Their music continues to please audiences and keeps everyone on the dance floor throughout the night.
“Our musical performances will truly be top notch this year,” states Sandra Michna, Weimar Chamber Secretary. Continues Michna, “Young and old are encouraged to bring those dancing shoes and share in the wonderful German heritage this community so great.” For more information, call the Weimar Area Chamber of Commerce at 979-725-9511 or e-mail weimarcc@cvctx.com.
