Borden Texas,

The Borden Heritage and The Borden Country Store

Be surprised, what you can find in Borden, the tiny town (pop. less than 50) where the condensed milk was created - the milk so many of us grew up with.

Borden and the Borden Country Store are

situated at the crossroads of the famous “Old Highway 90” and the “Old Spanish Trail”, nowadays known as CR 217, between Houston and San Antonio (see map). Gail Borden founded “Bordenville”, known as Borden today, around 1870. Borden fathered condensed milk and the long-time preserved meatloaf (for military use) and many other inventions his name is related to.

Gail Borden built his farm and diary factory in Borden just North of the Southern Pacific railroad tracks (established around 1850). For his workers and children (total population around 22; the maximum at the peak of his enterprises) he constructed two schoolhouses (in which he taught the local town’s people), a Cotton Gin Mill Factory, and the original Country Store.

The Borden cemetery gives you a good impression of the past as well. Gail Borden’s engraved Monument however, is located on his original property. A different family owns the property nowadays. By visiting the Borden Country Store and/or the adjacent Red Barn owners of the Borden Country Store would be delighted to inform you about Borden’s History and/or provide you with walking/driving maps and TOURS around the Historic sites.

The Borden Country Store, annex Saloon is the “Oldest Country Store” alongside Highway 90 and is owned by Gerrit and Marie Cramer. (Gerrit is Dutch and Marie is a Houstonian).

The Borden Country Store offers alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and Borden milk products. You can also enjoy several Dutch treats, snacks, and other finger foods. The owners would be delighted to serve you the famous Borden Burger either in the Saloon or on the deck while you reminisce in the country atmosphere.

The Red Barn, on the other hand, displays unique gifts, antique things, and Dutch presents. Almost every two weeks starting in September thru June local musicians perform in the Saloon or on the deck on Friday or Saturday evenings. We are open for birthday parties and organize seasonal festivities.

Next time when you are traveling between Houston and San Antonio or between Austin and the Coast stop at our Borden Country Store to enjoy your well deserved country style rest or bit into a Mamma’s tasty Borden Burger. A historic country-walking trail has been developed to show some of the more interesting aspects of his life when he lived and worked in this area. Maps may be obtained at The Borden Country at the Weimar Area Chamber of Commerce Office at 109 E. Main.
